Sunscreen and Sun Smarts

In Christchurch this summer, we all know to slip, slop, and slap. But why?

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in New Zealand, but the worst part is that it’s largely preventable.

Around 90% of all skin cancers can be attributed to sun exposure. Sure, we love trying to achieve the perfect tan, but there are serious consequences to leaving it too long and getting sunburn.

New Zealand falls under a large hole in the ozone layer. That’s the part of our stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun’s harsh ultraviolet radiation.

SunSmart Tips

You need to rub that sunscreen in!

Slip into shade if you can. Heading to the beach? Take an umbrella so you can escape the sun’s harsh rays, especially in the middle of the day.

Slip on some sun protective clothing. Like a rash top, or sun hat that also protects your neck.

Slop on some sunscreen, at least 20 minutes before going outside. Because it takes time for your skin to absorb the sunscreen, you need to apply it before heading out.

Choosing The Right Sunscreen

Here is where some of us get into trouble. Not all sunscreen is equal. For starters, check the SPF. Some moisturisers have SPF 8 to 10. While that’s technically a sunscreen, it’s not enough protection from the harsh summer sun.

Equally, some pay big money for SPF 100 sunscreen, thinking they get double the amount of protection of an SPF 50 sunscreen. The truth is, you’ll need to re-apply an extra high SPF sunscreen just as often as a lower to mid level one.

We Love MooGoo Sunscreen

StayWell Pharmacy are one of MooGoo’s exclusive stockists in Christchurch, and for good reason. They’re all about natural solutions for skin problems, which is great for people with allergies or sensitive skin.

MooGoo Natural Sunscreen is SPF 40, which is reasonably strong. Because it uses naturally derived Zinc as its active ingredient, MooGoo Sunscreen suits people sensitive to UV filters, or who don’t like that greasy feeling some sunscreens leave them with.

It’s suitable for all skin types, including babies and children. Like most sunscreens, it should be reapplied every 2 hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming.

For extra skin protection, use MooGoo MSM Cream after spending your day in the sun to help your skin to stay healthy.
